Paul Feig, actor and director of the comedies Bridesmaids and The Heat tweeted the official “Ghostbusters III” news about directing a new Ghostbusters movie. He’ll be working with writer and producer Katie Dippold, who wrote The Heat and is a co-producer on Parks and Recreation.

I, Richard Roy am not familiar with Paul Feig’s personality, including humor or wit. When I read his tweet before I had read reactions from ghostheads I felt his tweet rubbed (as a life long fan) ghostheads the wrong way. I hadn’t wrote about it at that time, the internet had previously blown up when Paul Feig’s name came up for the then Ghostbusters sequel and the idea of an all female Ghostbusters cast was being talked about. Even if you’re not as “diehard” as a fan, you could see without knowing Paul Feig how the tweet could come off as sarcastic as well.

The same night Sony’s Ghostbusters Twitter account also confirmed the latest developments with “Ghostbusters III.”

Fans and Ernie Hudson (interview) have been outspoken about this newest version of Ghostbusters. It isn’t necessarily because of the female cast. The first female Ghostbuster (as it should have been) was the animated version of Janine Melnitz during The Real Ghostbusters. A decade later, Kylie Griffin was ghost bustin to the extreme, and their have been female Ghostbusters in franchises ever since. Generally ghostheads don’t seem to mind female Ghostbusters, its the possible lack of continuity of our 30 year old franchise that’s “not good.”

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Paul Feig said the following about this new Ghostbusters movie:

I love origin stories. That’s my favorite thing. I love the first one so much I don’t want to do anything to ruin the memory of that. So it just felt like, let’s just restart it because then we can have new dynamics. I want the technology to be even cooler. I want it to be really scary, and I want it to happen in our world today that hasn’t gone through it so it’s like, oh my God what’s going on?

You should be able to see why “it’s pissing me (ghostheads) off.”

It seems like Paul Feig is contradicting himself. He “loves origin stories,” doesn’t want to “ruin the memory” of Ghostbusters, can easily “restart it.” Dan, Ivan, and Harold established the Ghostbusters origins. I’m not sure how Paul Feig, Katie Dippold, or whomever can basically ignore what’s come before while having new “dynamics” (whatever that means) and create new cooler technology.

About Characters

My number one thing is always about character and what is somebody learning from or transforming through whatever happens to them in the movie. So I think there will be definitely room to play with that. We want to do clever nods to it, but not cloying nods to it. We want to have the ability to really bring it into modern day.

How can you give nods to anything in the Ghostbusters universe while in some way basically duplicating it? :/

On Casting

That’s part of the fun for me is figuring out what’s the best combo, what’s going to be relevant and fun. Bottom line: I just want the best, funniest cast.”

Hopefully Paul Feig changes direction as this Ghostbusters movie moves further into development. The “bottom line” shouldn’t just be about casting the funniest women for the film. How about having the “best” script. The rest will most likely naturally fall into place as it did 30 years ago.

On Where The Script Is Now

We have a very rough, rough outline that we’re working with, but definitely know the basic story, know what we want the basic characters to do, know what we want the world to do and what the rules of our world are, but nothing I want to discuss obviously. It’s cool. I think it’s a really strong origin story that feels real—as real as a ghost story is. It’s going to be really fun and real. We’ll make it scary and funny.”

Those are shoes that can’t be filled, hopefully too at some point in this development they’ll work with Dan Aykroyd, even if he doesn’t write a single word.

On Original Cast Members Being Part Of This Ghostbusters

Well, I mean, look, those are my comedy heroes. So as far as I’m concerned, anybody wants to come back I welcome with open arms. It would just be in different roles now, but it would be fun to figure out how to do that.

As a passionate ghosthead you could see how that feels like a ‘slap in the face.’ Yes, 25 years have passed since Ghostbusters II. Naturally original characters would be in different places in their lives. It seems like previous ideas of the original cast being mentors could still work. Hopefully the writers will try (not to just placate to the fan base) to include Dan, Ernie, and Annie Of course I’d like to see Bill return, ghostheads have come to know he hasn’t been that interested.

Regardless of how you feel or felt about this October 2014 new Ghostbusters news, as fans we’ve been here before with previous writers which included Dan and Harold. Its just never been ‘officially’ announced by a director or Sony.

I’ve been known to say when it comes to Ghostbusters III I take a wait and see approach. Whatever happens with this new Ghostbusters movie, it doesn’t take away our memories or experiences with and from the GHØSTBUSTERS franchise.
